I don't care if it IS the south, what the hell kind of a name is that to give your kid?

It's a nick name, which at that time in the South was quite normal. Big Daddy, Big Momma, Sister Woman, Cat etc.

"Gooper" and "Brick" are both nicknames. As far as I can tell, no one ever mentions or refers to their given names.

Not as strange as some names floating around nowadays. Apple, Jett, Prince,North, Saint,Reign, Rumor.......
