Written by Richard Brooks?

The screenplay credits are a little whacky on this one: it has adaptation by Julius and Philip Epstein, even though epstein died in 1952 and this was made in 1958, and it has written by Richard Brooks. What does that mean? How much of the adaptation was done by the Epsteins and how much by Brooks?
