Bad Guy Heaven

Have to say excellent crew of villains in this one: Stephen Boyd, Henry Silva, Albert Salmi and, of course, Lee Van Cleef, whose death scene is quite moving. One of his better perfs as a young man.

I enjoyed this collection of bad guys, too. Lee Van Cleef is the best; and Albert Salmi was a nice surprise. I had recently seen him in a couple episodes of "The Twilight Zone."

As a fan of notable B-movie villains, I certainly relished the cast of veteran slimeballs in this movie! You got Stephen Boyd (Marsella from BEN-HUR), Lee Van Cleef (Angel Eyes from THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY), Henry Silva (THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE, among tons of others), and Albert Salmi heading one hell of a rogues gallery! Take them on with renowned heroic actor Gregory Peck, and you have a terrific classic western in your hands!

I thought the Van Cleef scene was sort of poorly done- it wasn't clear at all that Peck had fatally wounded him or had even intentionally shot him. It looked like Peck hit him with the gun and it may have accidentally discharged. Van Cleef appeared to be whimpering/making sounds right up to the end of the scene so I thought because he had begged for mercy that Peck had just left him wounded for the posse and went on after the Indian.

I read somewhere that this was Stephen Boyd's favourite of his films.

He does make an attractive villain in this as well as Ben Hur & in a similar role to

this in Shalako!
