Anybody notice the column of thick black smoke? [spoiler]

**Spoiler ahead, do not read unless you've seen the entire movie**

Anyway, after Raymon gets the phone call about the car accident... when Raymon and Cecile are driving up the road to go to the accident scene, up ahead shortly before they get to the police barricade they briefly show a plume of thick black smoke in the distance. I thought we were going to see Anne's wrecked car, burning furiously and emitting all that black smoke. But then it turns out her car apparently went off the edge of the road and ended up down in the ocean. So, there was clearly no burning car. Hmm... I wonder if that was a goof, or is there some other explanation for the black smoke?

Don't mess with me, man! I know karate, judo, ju-jitsu..... and several other Japanese words.

There could be many explanations but it's not in the least bit important.
