Interestingly, in a film acted in Japanese and then dubbed into English, I read her lips and the leading lady is indeed singing her songs in English, although reportedly dubbed by another singer. Ooey gooey fun.

Apparently it's news to some people that a person can learn more than one language and even sing in them.

This was 1950s Japan, shortly after the US occupation (officially) ended. Thousands of US soldiers were in Japan, and still are to this day. Japan was flooded with American culture. English-language songs weren't unusual in these circumstances.
