God, this was awful.

Jimmy, Kim and Jack are three of my favorites in the classic movie genre (that's why I rented it!), but this was just so bad. I didn't even make it all the way through this. Why did Jack Lemmon waste his talent on movies like this? Not just this movie, but so many other stupid comedies. Anyway, just glad I didn't buy this on a whim!

Jesus is coming. Look busy.

A 1959 movie very much of it's era. Like all the Doris Day movies, slow and tedious at times, but sadly they (romantic comedies) were all like that. This is just another of the genre with witches. And Lemmon hadn't reached super star status yet. I also struggled to finish it the first time. The last 20 minutes or so are soooo slow. But love the entire cast including Lanchester and Kovaks.

He didn't waste his talent. He was a rising star who had to pay his dues by playing second fiddle in several movies, until he hit it big with "Some Like It Hot."

It's too bad you couldn't stay with it for the final scene. It was very touching.

The pleasure and enjoyment of movies, like actual tangible art, colors, sights, smells, and even sounds...is subjective. So, at the same time that I recognize that not everyone has to "like" the same things, I have trouble with labeling something as "awful". Especially something which has so much to offer as this movie does. If one isn't a fan of romantic comedies then there are the individual performances that support the fantasy of this movie that I find worthy of appreciation. Certainly the aspect of Technicolor can be enjoyable. The spectacular fashions, no? That black/gold leopard print outfit of Kim's? Wasn't that worth the price of rental alone? Novak's hypnotizing voice, hips, eyes? Come on! The "magic" behind the transformational power of love...doesn't any of this "get" to you? How about the font style of the credits?

The soundtrack? Ernie Kovacs' bravura performance?

You've got me?! Who's got you?!

reply

You're crazed! This is a wonderfully fun and romantic classic!

reply

Sorry you felt that way. I (and many with me) really like this movie. Of course all movie are not for everyone.

reply

What some call 'stupid', others may call playful... Jack had a talent for comedy, so I'm sorry you don't appear to like it when he really let loose.

I like every Jack Lemmon movie (even as supporting actor) that I have ever seen. He may, in many, seem to play the same type of role, but he does it so brilliantly and with such charisma and charm. His playfulness is part of his charm and appeal.

Why don't you stop annoying people?

Personally I felt it was an enjoyable comedy.

No, it's a good movie, you just didn't like the female lead going after someone you liked, and she also played a witch which probably rubbed you raw some how.

Your statement is not valid.

Come on, Kiddies, don't you all think you're being a bit rough on
someone who is merely expressing an opinion??? Such babies.

The Op openly praised the cast, but was highly disappointed by the
film. I am somewhere in the middle. While I didn't hate it, it IS
lumpy in its pacing, a bit starved for wit and just plain ODD. But,
hey, the cat is very cool. A pleasant little film, but far from a
great one. I don't think director Richard Quine (a former actor)
was much of a director. A better director and a sharper script would've
helped.

reply

The OP is right, the movie doesn't deserve 6.9

It seems like for every at least half decent movie, there's got to be someone who feels a compulsion to post that the movie was "awful" or terrible or whatever. How about just limiting the post to "I didn't care for it"? In other words use a subjective standard, rather than trying to persuade all of the rest of us that the movie was objectively awful. BB&C, IMHO, is an ok movie. Didn't hate it, didn't love it. There are some good things in it. 6.9 seems just about right to me.

and just plain ODD

Which might be why I generally liked it. Some of us delight in the unusual.
