Merle's painting(s)

The paintings in these old movies are so bad. I'm thinking of the Cary Grant character's in "An Affair to Remember," and Gene Kelly's in "An American in Paris." Oh, and more recently, the drawing by the hero in Titanic. The viewer is supposed to think these artists are talented but their pictures look like something dashed off by a commercial artist for a woman's magazine---at best.
