Francois's treatment of Marie (spoilers)

This part of the film disturbed me but I guess 50s attitudes were different. Thanks to Francois, the "father" now thinks he is not her father and can rape her at will. Doing so angers Francois but then when he sees her again, he wants nothing to do with her. That snub eventually sends her back to her father and last we see, she's going to be stuck with him. So he helps Serge but condemns Marie.

Now, Marie is said to be the town slut so maybe she "deserves" this fate. Did Francois love her or was it just a fling? Of course, maybe the real love story here is between Francois and Serge. I guess reporting a rape & incest back then was not done because of embarrassment to the family and town in general. Seems very cruel by today's standards.

Expansion to your ego.

That was really weird.. Marie ended up with the old goat anyway at the end. With a smug look on her face too
