the ending (spoilers)

It seems Francois died getting Serge back in time for the birth of his son. I guess that was him killing himself, Christ-like in order to redeem Serge & also willing the baby to come out normal. But will that turn Serge around or is it just a short lived hope? Did Francois die or was he just slumped over in exhaustion? Left up to the viewer, I guess.

Expansion to your ego.

I thought he was slumped in exhaustion but I can't get out of my mind that we saw him out his boots on without socks and everyone told him thereafter to be wrapped up warm. Well feet, like hands and head, lose lots of heat if not wrapped up. So as you say it is left to the viewer to Imagine if Serge was Christ-like and sacrificed himself or if his selflessness saves him and Yvonne and Serge's marriage.

I think he just slumped over. Serge's laugh on the other hand.... It reflected the laugh/cry from earlier in the film. If the child was still born like the previous one he could have left like Francois suggested, but now he's tied down, condemned to the small town.

The entire movie sucked. I usually like films like this, but it was awful. Serges laugh at the end was ridiculous. So he had a healthy baby? Just means he will still be a drunk who abuses his wife and eventually his kid.
