I watched it last night and I am glad I did. Even though I've never been to Egypt, from this film it seems that the Cairo of 1958 was much less repressed than the Cairo of today. Correct me if I'm wrong since I've never been there and only see media portrayals: Muslim Brotherhood, single females attacked and violated by groups of men, etc.

Many of the females wore sleeveless dresses and there was plenty of fraternizing between the sexes. Hanouma seemed to flaunt her sexuality at every opportunity. I think I only saw one hijab in the entire film, worn by older wife of a conservative man. There was a scene in a bar when men and women were dancing together and some religious men commented that they didn't understand modern ways. Do men and women still dance together in Cairo?
