Were Mame and Lindsay Married at the End?

I've watched this movie MANY times, and tonight I just realized that Mame's letter mentions "Uncle Linday." I don't know how I missed that before. So did they finally marry at the end of the movie?

Thanks

Me too! I.e., I've also watched the movie many times, and yet when I caught part of it the other day, that was my first spotting of "Uncle Lindsay". And I too found myself wondering if they did indeed get hitched. Part of me hopes so: he was obviously crazy about her, he respected her unique qualities, and she had been alone (in some ways) since Beau's untimely death.

On the other hand, if they had got married, where was "Uncle Lindsay" at the very end, when Mame is charming the dickens out of her great-nephew Michael? Maybe that's another thing I haven't noticed--an explanation from Auntie Mame as to Lindsay's whereabouts.

Unfortunately for those of us who like definitive answers, Mame's reference to Lindsay Woolsey (love that name!) as "Uncle" could be merely a courtesy title, a way of showing appreciation for his decades-long friendship and support.

The only people who might know for sure regarding this burning question would be the authors of the screenplay--Betty Comden and Adolph Green--and both of them, alas, are long deceased.

A time for peace - I swear it's not too late! R.I.P., Pete.

I never got the impression that they were married. I think it was just the situation. He calls Vera "Auntie."

Maybe. In the telegram to Patrick & Pegeen in the final scene she says she must return to India in two weeks because that's when Uncle Lindsay will have finished his course in Yoga. (It was just on TCM as part of Rosalind Russell's birthday tribute.)

Yes, I got the strong impression from the telegram that they were man and wife.

reply

I concur. I got the impression they got married.
