and think it was crawford in this film. seemed like a gorgeous blend of all her late 50's b*tch type characters. i'm pretty sure this is also the film that faye dunaway watched to research her role in "mommie dearest".

No, I never for a moment confused Russell with Crawford in AUNTIE MAME, though I wasn't but 11 years old the first time I saw it - I did confuse her somewhat with Bette Davis, though, perhaps due to the New England accents (Russell was from Connecticut, Davis from Massachusetts).

As the movie progressed, it also occurred to me that Russell’s performance was very Bette Davis-like. They even refer to Bette in a scene when they’re talking about the movie version of Autie Mame’s life. Nice reference.
