He's Jesus right?

The title character and plot seems like a thinly-veiled metaphor for Jesus and the degradation of Christianity. A lot of people only paid attention to his movement because he supposedly could do magic tricks and in the end a lot of hangers on and hucksters took advantage. Not to mention the "resurrection" scene. It's as if Bergman might be suggesting that people have forgotten the true message and are preoccupied with the pomp and circumstance of organized religion and ritual. He did have a thing about religion, it makes sense.
