I didn't get it

Of all the Bergman films I've seen, this may be my least favorite. Prison is the next least favorite to come to mind, but I was so captivated by certain scenes that it still made an impact. This movie, however, I found to be slow paced, uninteresting, filled with unnecessary scenes, and lacking in social commentary. Don't get me wrong, there are some interesting moments (like when a women talks to Vogler about her deceased daughter and treats him like a prophet/mystic). But overall, I found this movie to be a bit of a chore to watch. Anyone else feel that way?

Honestly, this was my second Ingmar Bergman film, being the first Autumn Sonata, therefore I can't really compare. However, I quite liked it. I'm rather used to Hollywood movies only and my approaching to European cinema is rather limited, then I found the relatively slow pace and the development of the story to be very interesting, as well as the acting. It made me very curious regarding Bergman's work, and now I'm planning on watching more of his work.

It took me until recently to see this film, which I enjoyed very much. But the problem is I rate too many of Bergman's other films so highly, that at least after one viewing only I can't say it is among his best. It is as if there is almost too much going on in the film, lending it a bit of a confused air. But the acting is the usual extraordinary effort by Bergman's cast, and the interior cinematography is as good as it gets.

I hope to see it again in teh not too distant future.

Yeah, it's just not a good movie. And yeah, it was a chore.

The Magician isn’t slow-paced compared to other Bergman films
