I looked for this for YEARS!!!

I saw this on TV when I was a little kid in the 1980s and tried for 20 years to figure out what it was. I would describe it to people, hoping someone would know the name, then just tonight, I read about it on Wikipedia, linked from Stephen King's the Tommyknockers. What an awesome movie this was.
