pretty good 'TV sfx'

I feel that the TV series sfx were in some important ways superior to the later theatrical film. The Martians just looked "more real" to me, as did the mental images of the Martian race purge.

In any case, I think that the Martian "locust-crabs" in both of these Quatermass films are some of the very best aliens ever conceived and executed. To me they look like real biological specimens and I wouldn't change anything about them. Of course, they were all dead, so no animated sequences were required for close-up action. The Martian purge doesn't really count because there are distance shots, swift cutting and no real close-ups of the Martians as they would move normally, in non-combat situations. These days, puppetry-cum-cgi would handle these little critters perfectly. But that's NOT an endorsement for any remakes.

Having loved the film version since I was a kid, I was thrilled to finally see this version (thanks, archive.org!).
The overall effects were fine... and I think the import thing here is that the story and the actual ideas within were so strong that it would be absurd to criticize the effects. The story had my mind reeling, and to allow myself to be hindered by anything else is trivial.
Incredible concept of not just our evolution and physiology, but mixing the occult arts in there as well! An incredibly advanced concept, even by today's standards.
And, after all I said about the story overpowering any effects, I shudder at the idea of a remake; which would indeed focus on the CG creature effects, and most likely turn it into a Will Smith shootout film. Maybe a BBC miniseries could pull it off? Either way, I'm happy with what we have now.
