Marion Dougherty

One of the most fascinating aspects of this show is the casting of now-famous actors in the beginning of their careers: Dustin Hoffman, Sandy Dennis, Robert Duvall, Jon Voight, Jean Stapleton, Carroll O'Connor, Gene Hackman, Maureen Stapleton, et al. One woman was responsible for that--casting director Marion Dougherty--and she started with this TV program. She's the subject of a newish documentary, "Casting By," and " Naked City" is featured prominently in it. The police show made her famous and redefined the role of the casting director. She's credited with launching the careers of many, many stars, and "Naked City" is featured in the doc and referred to as "legendary." I concur.

I agree with your post. I found "Casting By" to be very informative. The program is available on HBO On-Demand until 9/2.

I just watched "Casting By" On Demand and she was a fascinating woman. Had no idea that she was responsible for bringing so much talent to the forefront.

Made me come here to revisit the show that I loved so much when I was a young kid. If I recall correctly, we only saw about 2 seasons at the end of it back then, so I'd like to re-visit as many of those episodes as I can. Glad to see that most of it is available on DVD - it will be great to go back and spot some young fresh faces that went on to become well-known in both TV and films.

You've done some bad things, sweetie.

Hi- yeah I watched that show on HBO about her too. Very informative. Who was that one British director who was such a dick about people using the word 'director' for her? Talk about insecure!
