John Russell should've been a star !

John Russell had a presence that should have translated into more roles in bigger films . He is sleek and can easily be menacing if called for , as in Pale Rider . He would've made a great P.I. or detective or secret agent , and a convincing bad guy if playing a foe to any of those roles . My Mom used to go crazy for him as most women did , its too bad hollywood missed the boat with this special actor .
Oh yeah !

I think there is validity in the comment about Russell's acting , but with him its about presence , like Eastwood after him and many action stars today the acting is fairly wooden . This isn't Hamlet , but I beleive for the roles he was suited for he was perfect . Look at James Arness or even a Steven Seagal , acting talent no , presence yes . I think the nuances are part of the character as its written , all about the law and uncomfortable with feelings of any kind , it was another era .

A matter of taste and opinion I guess , I've seen him in '' Soldier of Fortune '' and '' Jason of Star Command '' as well as a few of his other films and while limited , I think he's well in Arness' class , I don't know about the singing aspect , but he did manage two or three tv series even if some were short lived . As I said a matter of individual taste I guess , its good everyone doesnt like the same things in the same way I beleive .

Oh yeah !

Not everyone is good at everything. I think the role of Dan Troop was excellent for John Russell.

As an example of not being good at doing something:

What happened to Peggie Castle??

Is it really that difficult to click on her name in the credits?

Unfortunatly Peggie Castle a very pretty lady had a severe drinking problem and I beleive she died pretty young from liver disease , very sad indeed , I think she and Russel were good together .Yes confirm that , she died at 45 of liver disease .

Hello Peace -- John Russell was playing a stern leader character with presence and charisma, probably not much like his real self. He had been in movies more than a decade before this, playing other characters quite satisfactorily. Did you expect a tough frontier marshal to be all flirty and raise his eyebrows and giggle back at Peggie Castle? People like Chuck Norris are really nonactors, yet become box-office stars in movies.

Gene Kelly? I guess he was the dancing Maverick.

Sorry for calling you out on an innocent glitch but when you're such a pompous ass and insulting to others, you deserve it.

I watched "Lawman" as a kid, as well as the show John Russell shared with Chick Chandler, "Soldiers of Fortune". I thought then that John was a very good looking man and loved both shows. Tonight I just watched another episode on "Lawman" on the Retro channel. I must agree that he should have been a star. I see nothing wrong or wooden in his performances, but then I am just a plain person who enjoys tv, not a critic. Too bad we didn't get to see too much of him later in his life.
