Why Can't More Women Be Like Donna Reed?

Donna Reed is my idea of the ideal woman. She is pretty, intelligent, strong- yet knows her place. She doesn't mind obliging her husband. She is content in raising children, and not on any ego power trip. She is supportive and loving. If more women were like her the world would be a better place!

It's cute that you think Donna Reed (not Donna Stone) is your ideal woman when she worked as an actress for decades, ran her own production company and was a vocal opponent of the Vietnam War. Reed was the opposite of some meek little flower. She spoke her mind and didn't allow anyone to run all over her - ever. If you think anyone can own a successful company and "know their place", which presumably is code for "a good little woman who has no opinion and never speaks lest she challenge me", you're more delusional than your post belies.

On the flip side, perhaps the world would be a better place if men were more like Dr. Alex Stone. You know, successful doctors who are handsome and stay in shape, respectful to their wives, involved in their childrens' lives, don't carry on affairs or troll the internet for sex, and provide well for their families so their wife doesn't have to work. Funny how you "good old days" people don't wax poetic about how men have drastically changed for the worse. Oh, that's right. This has nothing to do with men, you guys are perfect! It's all about how it's not fair that you can't outright marginalize people who are of a different gender, sex, color, religion or sexual orientation as yourself.

Goodness, change and evolution is awful.

Thumbs up. Excellent rebuttal and spot on.

I always thought, for the era, Donna Stone was pretty progressive. While she CHOSE to stay home, it was quite clear early in the show that she didn't have to; as she was also registered nurse.

And in a later season, she went back to work after she got everybody out of the house in the morning in the opening credits (or so it seems.)

reply

True, but she still seemed to know her place.

Donna Reed was always one of my favorites actresses from that period, She had already been a big time movie star in films like "It's a Wonderful Life" and "From Here To Eternity". She did not play a weak 50s housewife in her TV show but rather she and her husband ran the household together. I always had a huge crush on her as she was both quite beautiful and an extremely strong and opinionated woman .

Wow! Nice comeback! I don't ever want to piss you off! :)

Yup, the "good 'ole days" when you could yell "beetch git me a beer!" or otherwise you'd slap some sense into the "uppity beetch!"

The thing that's sort of ironic is that while TV actors played ideal married couples in their shows, in real life many if not most of them went through multiple divorces.

We talk often about how older TV shows offer a fictionalized, idealized view of life back then, but regardless of how wacky or unbelievable the shows were, the ONGOING marry-and-divorce & marry-and-divorce activity of these celebrities was pretty much MORE unbelievable than most sitcom plots...!

Pertaining to Donna Stone, I agree!

We have a lot of bitter single men and women today that expect too much or looking for this flawless unrealistic person. This show is a great escape but you will never find a marriage or family life this perfect and clean.

Short answer: in modern times, the cancer of feminism has corroded many women's brains.

And of course:

More men should be like Alex Stone: excellent wage-earners, supportive of their wife and family, intelligent, look great in suits, and handsome.
