Warner Brothers has been stingy as all getout about releasing its old shows on DVD.

reply

Since I wrote the above message Warner Brothers has started putting out a lot more stuff: Maverick, Sugarfoot, The FBI, The Gallant Men, as well as some shows who's rights they've purchased later: Tarzan, Daktari, Dr. Kildare, etc. So while what I said seemed true three years ago it's much less true now.

But they still haven't put out any of their well-known detective series: 77 Sunset Strip, Hawaiian Eye, Surfside 6, or Bourbon Street Beat. I don't know why, as all have many votes on the TVShowsOnDVD site, particularly 77SS. They also haven't put out some of their Westerns: Bronco, Lawman, Colt .45.

Maybe we just have to be patient, I don't know.

reply

77 Sunset Strip just started airing in November in order and a channel called Decades, all in great condition.

reply

Warner Bros. is Looney Tunes. Every day they hoard this stuff, the population that would pay dearly to watch/own them dwindles. Marketing Dept. seems like amateurs.

reply

I couldn't agree more. There are a lot of us fans, cash in hand and willing to part with it to acquire decent entertainment. Surely, someone in those ivory towers is old enough to appreciate the $ potential in distributing beloved vintage series.

They can't possibly think everyone only
wants more "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" or the so-called "Real Wives" franchises. . .or can they?

No, they're not. Haven't you noticed that the world is run by kids in their thirties who don't know anything except the latest trends? The adults who watched it in 1958 are now dead. The kids, namely me and most other posters here, are in our 60s now. We are not the target audience for anything now. Quite sure Warner Brothers and anyone else who now owns the show are run by clueless kids in their 30s. They don't know or care about anything from the 50s or 60s unless they read about it. This show is such a picture of 1958. It is completely wasted on anyone born decades later. If they appreciated it they would have released it for the cash alone, years ago. They are too caught up in their image of the present day to even be aware that anyone who was alive in the past still exists.

I would also be interested in buying all the episodes on dvd!!!
I don't understand why WB hasn't released this fantastic tv series on dvd??
I'm sure WB would cash in a nice profit if they bothered to remaster the original episodes and sell them
on dvd. That was a great show!! ALN ( AMERICAN LIFE NETWORK ) only shows 77 Sunset Strip once
a week on Monday nights , but they show Combat almost every day. Bummer, I'd rather watch Kookie
solving a caper than Sgt Saunders shooting Nazi's .

reply

What's wrong with shooting Nazis?

ditto.... I've been looking for it for 2 years

reply

WB BUT I HAVE ALL THE EPS AND IT IS GREAT TO WATCH ALL THIS AGAIN

reply

They must have remastered the show, the episodes that American Life Network shows are beautiful. I would also like to see Warner Brothers release all of Surfside 6, Hawaiian Eye and Bourbon Street Beat as well.

reply

I, too, would buy each season of 77 Sunset Strip, Surfside 6, Hawaiian Eye, Bourbon Street Beat, (and don't forget Adventures in Paradise starring Gardner Mckay) in a heartbeat. I would want them remastered and please, please include bumpers, original commercials, and season previews. Many of the major stars are thankfully still alive to add commentary.

Now's the time for Warner Brothers to do it while the Boomers are at their financial and physical peak. What a windfall could be had for Warners if produced reverently and marketed correctly. Many of my co-workers are my age (52) and we often discuss the desire to see these shows again (especially Kookie and Cricket!).

reply

YES I HAVE THEM ON DVD AND ENJOY WATCHING THEM OVER AND OVER

reply

I can't find them to buy!! Where did you get your episodes? I am especially looking for the episode, "Stranger From the Sea".

reply

What are the quality of your dvds? Are they copied from television? I see some for sale on ebay.

reply

Does anyone know where copies of 77 sunset strip can be purchased now? And also if they're being shown on tv anywhere?

reply

It's being shown on Me-too tv in Chicago (and maybe other cities) once a week on Saturday nights. They're at the tail end of season 3 now.

reply

see my question on the post where someone says they have the dvd's.

I recently was a sucker and purchased a two-box, 24-disk set of DVDs advertised as the complete 77 Sunset Strip series from thedvdplanet.org.

This set has the most defects of any DVD or DVD set I have ever seen or heard of.

Out of the total of 24 disks, only ONE disk has no significant problems.

One disk will not play or even display a menu at all.

There are at least 17 episodes missing. The exact number is not ascertainable, because one of the disks, which probably contains six or more episodes, will not play or even open to the menu.

There are 62 episodes that have picture and sound quality so poor that they are unwatchable. The remaining episodes have fair to poor quality. None have good quality.

I have attempted to contact thedvdplanet.org, but I am not hopeful of obtaining a refund.

I am going to start a new thread which will have all the details of this set's defects, but I am posting here to warn as many potential buyers as possible away from thedvdplanet.org.

reply

I bought a set with 100 episodes from a couple in Dover and they were recorded off of TV. They did a good job. No defects what so ever. Sometimes a good bootleg is beter than these so called professional companys.

reply

Are you interested in selling a some copies of 77 sunset strip? I'm especially interested in season 5, episode 17, titled Crashout". Thanks,

I heard that a box set will be coming out. Something like they did for Man From UNCLE set.

Also some talk about a 77 Sunset Strip movie. Maybe the DVD set will be released around the movie?

For now I'll record off TV. Can't wait for the box set.

reply

Warner Bros. owns the entire series, and there is talk that the Warner Archive is planning to soon release a box set of the series by seasons, along with Hawaiian Eye and the other TV detective shows and Western series of the late 1950s-early 1960s. Hopefully soon!

There's a tiny bit of info about why the 77 Sunset Strip DVDs haven't been released yet through the Warner Archive in here...

http://tvshowsondvd.com/news/Site-News-Classic-TV-Christmas-Collection/14710

"...this is mainly what's holding up Warner Archive releases of shows like 77 Sunset Strip! That was an hour-long show, with seasons that consisted of 34-40 episodes most seasons (except the sixth and final one, which only had 20). The WBshop doesn't want to sell an MOD title with 12-20 DVDs in the set just for one season...think of the cost for something like that! So they are waiting on that title, and other shows in the same boat, until they work out the dual-layer MOD issues. I'm told they're getting closer and closer to it, mind you. Stay tuned and we'll let you know about any further developments along those lines!"

Touch a button. Things happen.

I hope this is issued on DVD. I watched this as a kid and it was one of the coolest shows on TV.

reply

Episodes are now streaming on Warner's new Instant Archive. I think its only available online and via Roku.

reply

with Efrem Zimbalist Jr's recent passing, the pressure is on for WB to get them out on DVD.

reply

I replied on one of the other threads on this topic. But one of the main challenges WB has in releasing a DVD set of this series is because on a large number of the shows there are songs/music on them, that is no longer owned by WB, but by other entities.

So WB would have to work out a number of contractual settlements with all these other content owners. If they are inclined to do so.
