I like this despite its faults, some questions.

I like this film but it feels dated in its use of non Chinese actors as Chinese characters.

Another problem is that the South coast of England is unconvincing as China.

There is not lot happening at points in the film.

But overall I like it,Todd is fine as the captain and the rest of the cast do what they can with limited parts.

I do have a couple of questions that somebody might be able to help me with?

The sailors at no point arm themselves with small arms, did they not fear an assault by Chinese troops?

If you research this incident on the internet you get people saying that the British were crazy and reckless to allow the ship to be put in harm's way as it was.

Was it an error to send the ships that way?
Were the British somehow helping the nationalist Chinese forces?

thanks for the reply.

I understand your points.
I still think this film is odd, even although they invent action sequences I think it drags at points.

As for the real life question of why the ship was allowed to get into trouble,I don't doubt that the Chinese government had given permission for the ship and other British ships to go the way they did but did other nations decide not to send their ships due to the dangerous situation?

The USA spent/wasted millions of dollars supporting the anti communist Chinese government so we can probably agree that the USA was not soft on communism but their ships were not attacked?

Interesting film even if I don't love it like I love MORNING DEPARTURE for example.

Which non Chinese actors? The only one I noticed was the Chinese colonel, who was played by a Russian! He was also the only Hollywood "name" in it (even if he was B-list). Some of the rest were well known in the UK but I bet they'd never heard of them in the US. There were quite a few actors who later became well known on British TV.
