Available on Youtube

BBC TV's screening of the latest version of WFTP has obviously sparked interest in previous productions, both of which are available on Youtube - and both have very similar scripts. So in five days I've watched three renditions. Without wishing to prompt a debate about the other two away from their own entries, I thought the BBC's was the best, especially when it came to the ending.

Already there's plenty of comment here about the 1957 version, so I'll only say that the conventions of the time left it unclear about how intimate was Vole's relationship with Emily and that Tyrone Power and Marlene Dietrich were both too old for their roles - but then film producers have always extended the best-by dates of their big names. And when Vole arrived at Sir Wilfrid's chambers he seemed remarkably relaxed for a man who'd just been questioned by the police about a murder.

By the way, neither Youtube offering fitted onto my TV screen. One was too big for it, the other too small. There are also a number of those annoying Youtube pages where one can't actually see the film but are invited to click on a link and sign up - something I'm always wary about.
