the months Barbara and Hardy were 'together' (possible spoilers)

After the scene where Hardy tells Barbara that he doesn't love her and he doesn't plan to marry her and then they hug.

After that Christmas scene Evelyn takes Barbara and Hardy down to the shed-like room in the backyard. Anyway Evelyn leaves, and Barbara and Hardy are left alone and he tells her he is shipping off the next day.

Anyway one of them I can't remember which, refer to the months they have spent together. I was wondering during those months were they suppose to have had sex in that time on numerous occasions. He says that he has nothing to feel guilty about but then they talk about being in each others arms.

I was a little unsure, could anyone verify this for me?

During those months, Barbara and Jack didn't have sex. If you remember the line from Jack;

"You must have thought it strange to times I told you how wonderful it was just to hold and have you hold me and nothing more."

They were both lonely, and entered into a close friendship. Although they were falling in love with each other, they remained plutonic and provided companionship and affection without the need for sex. 'Lying in a ditch full of guilt' refers to the fact that they didn't make love and there wasn't a risk of Barbara falling pregnant, and consequently being left alone with a baby if Jack was killed.

At the end of the scene, they both hesitate for a minute, before ending up in a passionate embrace. It is clear at this stage that they know they are in love with each other, so Jack breaks off the kiss and runs out of the room before it can go any further.

ok thanks

i always thought that line about nothing more meant that they had had sex but the 'nothing more' was love.

thanks for clearing that up

They didn't have sex because they were afraid she'd get pregnant and then he would go to battle and die, just like what happened to Anne.

If Anne hadn't gotten pregnant then they probably, definitely would have had sex.

Take my hand, to the promised land...
