This was such a good movie!

I loved this. Would never have seen it, but I asked my cousin to tape Joan Fontaine in "The Constant Nymph" and she snagged this one off TCM as well.

Usually, I don't like sad movies. But this had enough romance and hope that it more than made up for the sadness. Also, a nice message about what happens to ideals during wartime.

The Jean Simmons/Paul Newman romance was luscious. And I loved the Joan Fontaine storyline - very unexpected...and cool.

Plus a young Piper Laurie and very very young and adorable Sandra Dee. Too much beauty in one movie.

Anyway, just wanted to say it rocked.

pouncemo,

I thought the movie was good until about 17 minutes before the end. After watching the last 17 minutes, I change my rating to "excellent."

I also loved the Joan Fontaine story line. Especially: "Beloved daughter. Come home at once. Bring child." Signed: "Mother."

Yes, you nailed it. "Beloved daughter..." was so unexpected, especially for those days. So poignant and moving.

You are super at getting right to the essence of the thing. Right to the heart.

Thanks!
