Made in Hollywood, not New Zealand

Reading over the viewers' comments, there appears to be a reasonably widespread view that "until They Sail" was made, as well as set, in New Zealand. While there are some lovely establishing shots of Christchurch and Wellington, which are great to see, the film was made in the studio. If there was any doubt about it, the end titles proclaim it quite proudly: Made in Hollywood.

The filming location is listed as New Zealand on this site...Made in Hollywood, doesn't necessarily mean filmed there.

I guess it's like looking at clouds. You see one thing and I see another. Peace.

Apparently, MGM intended to make the movie in color -- obviously to take advantage of the attractions of the all-star cast and capture the allure of this South Seas paradise -- but after director Robert Wise made his first trip to NZ he decided it had to be in monochrome to capture the spirit of NZ society.
