Mystery Science Theater 3000 version.

can someone please tell me why to look for the Mystery Science Theater 3000 version? my version is the Hendring one but is there another version?

reply

Mystery Science Theater 3000 is a now-defunct TV show where a guy and his robot pals made fun of bad movies. They screened the movie, sat in front of it, and added sarcastic comments out loud during all of it. The Undead is one of almost 200 movies they did. This particular episode is not on video, but you can download it from some p2p programs such as eMule.

It still doesnt make it alright to rape the movie. If they would have for example showed the original version first, followed by the raped version, it would have been okay.

Maybe it doesnt make the viewers dumber, but it generally enforces disrespect towards movies. And you are right, these movies in many cases are bad movies, they are movies that are funny because they are so bad: so why cannot you just watch the movies themselves and laugh at them, instead of having someone else joke at them for you, pointing you where to laugh, etc? Why wouldnt people want independence, the right to choose where to laugh, the right to enjoy the movie itself with no interruption from stupid robots?

I think MST would have loved to do the big budget movies if they could. That being said, I recently watched Diabolik. Not a very good example of a "good" movie they made fun of. In fact, for me, the movie would have absolutley no entertainment value if it were not for the commentary from Mike and the Bots. Feel free to disagree just understand "different strokes for different folks." There is no reason to be hateful of others because they do not subscribe to your opinion. You made a comment about it being a show for "stupid Americans" Isn't racism is a sign of stupidity? Does comments such as this really qualify your opinion or make people lose respect for you. Granted we have are share of morons here in the states but that seems to be the case of the entire human species. What nation of intellectuals do you come from?

reply

Jesus Christ, how whiny can you possibly be? Someone doesn't like a movie? Good thing you're there to tell them it's because they're "brainless Americans". No one cares that Mystery Science Theatre is too complicated for you to understand, so shut up and watch your terrible movies without the bots.

While I realize it is virtually pointless to post on a topic that has been dead for nearly 7 years, I feel like I need to point this out. While people may consider shows like MST3K the "raping" of a film, consider the fact that most of the films that MST3K riffed gained an audience that would have never discovered the film. I would have never seen The Undead if not for the MST3K episode, but have since purchased a VHS copy that was not "raped." Many filmmakers actually felt honored to have their movies on MST3K, even Roger Corman himself (see his "Behind the Actor's Studio" interview where he said he thought the episode was funny). Consider too the fact that films like Mitchel, Manos: The Hands of Fate, Corpse Vanishes, and the Gamara films were distributed on DVD because people saw the MST3K episodes and requested these movies be updated to a modern medium (at the time).

reply

Disrespect? I own practically every movie that MST riffed in its un-MST'd form. I would never have done so if it weren't for the sheer pleasure of experiencing it the first time with Joel/Mike and the bots.

Also, we're talking about bad movies here. Movies that quite often don't deserve a shred of respect because the creators were too drunk, lazy, ignorant, high, corrupt or naive to tell a good story.

I think you need to learn how to separate your opinion from the objective universe. I respect your right to hate MST3K, but you are crossing the line when you begin to throw accusations and judgments around. Just because people don't share your view doesn't mean you are right and they are wrong. It just means everybody's got a different view. If we didn't what would be the point in discussing anything at all?

reply

Way to have no sense of humour! This film - like most Corman - is a joke. It's only suitable to have such witty writer/performers make fun of it. Anyone who actually enjoys this film as a creative piece has no taste whatsoever!

reply

Prospero was never a prince, you wanker.

reply

In shakespeare, propspero was not a prince. But in corman's "masque of the Red Death", Vincent price played a character named Prince Propsero, and the confusion may rise from the two characters.

I too loved MST3K and have no problem with "disrespecting" movies; they are not sacred relics. I personally would have liked to see what they would have done with "Citizen Kane".

This movie, "The Undead", is a wonderful filmed fairy tale given a basis in psychic science. Hypnosis isn't just a plot device in this movie; this was the time of "audrey Rose" and other regression accounts that used hypnosis. And I have nothing but admiration for Dorothy Neumann, the ugly witch, and the premise that beauty and good are not synonymous. This will come as news to the "Charmed" generation.

reply

I realize this posting is several years old, but I'd just like to add that most, if not all, the movies riffed by the MST3K crew were actually GIVEN to them by the films owner! The MST3K producers didnt just randomly go around picking movies to riff, they were happily supplied with them! Don't make it sound as if MST3K are thugs picking on poor innocent movies here. Apparently the films owner realized these films are way past their prime, some very corny and found a good avenue to renew interest. It's called having a sense of humor, try it. You'll like it.

Your rude and ignorant pronouncements about "brainless americans" and absurd conclusions about how films have lower ratings on imdb because of this show (???) only serves to highlight your own loud-mouthed stupidity and narrowmindedness.

Heck, I enjoyed MST3K and I also have a deep fondness for THE UNDEAD, with all its freakish flaws, warts and all. I see nothing wrong with heckling movies, and there is nothing wrong with a program the premise of which was just that.

Stop your snivelling about "movie rape" or whatever hysterical label you want to give it and realize there were many FANS out there of the films being heckled who enjoyed MST3K. Some folks (like me) discovered movies through the MST3K broadcasts that they might otherwise never have seen. The show did a wonderful thing by promoting some of these films to new audiences.

Only a Tim Burton fanatic would be this ridiculously serious about "film"...come ON, most of the movies that MST3K lampooned were exploitation jobs in the first place -- grade-b (or grade-z) quality productions. Hack jobs in some cases.

No, I don't need robots to "think" for me. But I did (and still do) enjoy their brand of humor. I also don't need a pompous Prince to tell me how to view movies, either.

I have most of the MST3K movies on DVD. I am willing to make a copy for cost of materials and postage. Drop me a line if interested. [email protected]

MST3k was a great show. Practically all the movies they chose to pick on only benefitted from being selected by being lifted out of complete obscurity.

reply

You`re looking at it all wrong. Without MST3K period, some (if not most) of the films they did would have faded into obscurity. The episodes and movies they do can make fans of the movies, out of viewers of the show. I discovered Ray Dennis Steckler and became a fan of his film^making because of one of the shows they did, "TISCWSL...Mixed Up Zombies". And I have bought many of his DVDs because of it.

Television alone alters movies anyway. To play a movie on Tv they'll often cut out parts to fit it to a specific time and add commercials to it. Commercials alone are breaking up the movies rythem enough to destroy a pleasant viewing. Then they cut out certain words(Not just bad words, some stations remove words like God and Jesus) and then dub in other voices that aren't even close in sound or inflection.

So for Mystery science feature to do what they did was no more a rape to films then what they experience sometimes ten times worse from TV.

It also has created more recognition for these films that normally would have disappeared into obscurity anyway. And points out not just how terrible these films are, but how much fun they are to laugh at and have a sense of humor about.

They couldn't pick movies that were unwatchable, that would make their show hard to take. They selected specific films that they found entertaining enough with its faults and then added their own humor over it.
