Western movie question

I'm trying to identify a western movie (possibly TV show) I saw when I was young.

In the movie, a kid tells a lawman that he lost his penny. Later in the movie, the lawman was at the bottom of a staircase. (I think he may have been drunk). He hears a noise behind him (up the steps) and turns, draws his gun and pulls the trigger. The gun just happened to be out of bullets. He realizes that he had just fired at the same boy he saw earlier. The boy holds up a large cent coin and proudly says, "I found my penny!" I forget the next part exactly, but the lawman is so shook up because he almost killed the boy he either refuses to be a lawman or wont wear a gun anymore. (I'm not sure which).

I may be off on some minor details but this is the basic premise

The movie I'm thinking of is a serious (dramatic)one. It's been a while since I've seen Blazing Saddles, but I can't remember a scene like that in it (although I'm sure it had parodies of scenes from classic westerns. Mel Brooks is always good.

I can't give you a definitive answer but you may be thinking of The Fastest Gun Alive with Glenn Ford and Broderick Crawford. Best wishes, Peter
