Pan + Scan, or Widescreen?

I bought a copy of Time Limit and was surprised to see a notice at the front that said "the film has been reformatted to fit [my] screen." To my knowledge, this is only done when a widescreen film has been subjected to cropping, i.e. "pan & scan." This film is dated 1957 which means it probably was shot in widescreen. I can't tell for sure but it looks like P&S when I see it.

Anyone have any info on this?

I recently saw this movie on TCM, and it was not in widescreen format. I do not see any evidence from the photography that it was pan and scan, and TCM is usually very faithful to the original format.

I have seen similar messages about "reformatting to fit your screen" on other 4:3 ratio movies which is rather confusing.

It's only for Really Special Movies (whatever that means) that they change standard packaging verbiage -- so their disclaimer covers movies that were never other than 4:3 in the first place.
