Alistair Cooke

Attempted to watch "Three Faces of Eve" this afternoon but it just didn't do it for me. But it WAS cool seeing and hearing a young Alistair Cooke serving as the narrator.

For those of you like me who remember television prior to cable and satellite, PBS (back in the day) was the only real alternative programming. And Alistair Cooke's openings to 'Masterpiece Theater' and 'Alistair Cooke's America' were staples on Sunday nights.

Plus I thought the incredibly talented Lee J Cobb should have been handed a few better lines. He was under-utilized in the film.

"What's wrong with a little good, clean violence?"

Cooke was also well known for his "Letter from America" weekly radio broadcast on BBC, in which he gave his take on events in the U.S. I made a point of listening on shortwave every week. He died not long after giving up the show, and is sadly missed.
