actually, the film serves to confirm the theory of evolution. the gorilla is referred to as "almost human," and he appears to have at least some reasoning power. he realizes that he has been imprisoned, escapes from his cage, and in the end helps to save the day by killing (or at least seriously injuring) one of the villains. (by the way, i watched this film twice. the second time while drinking. and i think i enjoyed it more the second time around.)
