Remake

No there is no news of a remake, sorry. My question is if there were to be one who would you think would be good for the cast? Cate Blanchett as Brett and Owen Wilson as Robert is about all I could come up with.

reply

Keanu Reeves.

My cast:

Jake: Jude Law--yes I know he screwed up the narrator in All the King's Men, but let's give him a second chance. Plus he has that silent tortured look which is needed for, um, Jake's condition.

Brett: Cate Blanchett--I totally agree with you. I envisioned her when reading the novel. Runner up: Naomi Watts.

Robert: between Matt Damon and Sean Astin. I know that Robert is Jew, but that doesn't really need to be adhered to in the movie since in the novel he's pretty much based on steorotypes.

Bill: Vince Vaughn--if you read the novel, the character of Bill is like all of Vaughn's characters in his comedies: loud, rude and sarcastic. It's well suited for him.

Mike: Paul Bettany--Mike is drunk throughout the novel. His character is really hard to judge, so it will be up to the actor to bring what he wants to the role. So any actor can play him, I'm just a Paul fan.

Pedro Romero: Gael Garcia Benal--he's young, he's handsome, why not? I could imagine him as a bullfighter and Cate's Brett falling for him. Oh wait, don't they already star in a movie together? Even better!

I actually had to do this for a class project, and this is who I used! :) I based it mainly on nationality, appearance, and my personal perceptions of the actors.

Robert Cohn - Noah Wyle (Jewish)
Frances Clyne - Lara Flynn Boyle (controlling, manipulative, possessive, jealous)
Jake Barnes - Jake Gyllenhaal
Lady Brett Ashley - Keira Knightley (British; can play abrasive, independent women)
Mike Campbell - Gerard Butler (Scottish, "tanned and healthy-looking")
Harvey Stone - Jack Nicholson (compulsive gambler, broke, unshaven, cruel)
Wilson-Harris - Christian Bale (friendly, innocent)
Montoya - Jose Luis Lopez Vazquez (older father figure)
Pedro Romero - Diego Luna (good-looking young Spanish guy)
Belmonte - Antonio Banderas
Count Mippipopolous - Nicolas Cage
Bill Gorton - Sean Penn

reply

Jake Barnes - Hayden Christensen (about the right age, can act cynical and depressed; he received good reviews for his performance in Shattered Glass, so the guy has some credibility as an actor)
Brett Ashley - Kate Winslet (British, about the right age; Knightley is way too young, I am afraid)
Robert Cohn - Adrien Brody (provided he puts on a lot of muscle to be convincing as a boxer)
Mike Campbell - Ewan McGregor (Scottish)
Bill Gorton - Jack Black (let's face it, Bill is the comic relief)
Pedro Romero - hire a real-life bullfighter to play the role, thus adding to the believability; plus, he can do the bullfighting himself, no stunt double
Montoya - Antonio Banderas
Count Mippipopolous - John Rhys-Davies

Comments, anyone?

He was a poet, a scholar, and a mighty warrior. He was also the most shameless exhibitionist since Barnum and Bailey.

I think Ben Stiller would be good as Robert Cohn.

Brad Pitt could be Jake, and Lady Brett would be Angeline Jolie.

The 1957 movie is horrible because Tyrone Power was 44. In the original novel, all the characters, including Jake, were in their early 30s, so they could be a part of the Lost Generation. The bad casting ruined the film from the onset for me.

Having said that, Keira Knightley is the absolute perfect choice for Brett, although we would have to wait 7 years for her to age; she's too young now. Ryan Gosling has in 7 years should be 34, and he has the easy-going, demure nature of Jake.

I really hope they remake it because it's my favorite book and the 1957 version did not do justice to it just as the movie of the Great Gatsby did not do justice F. Scott's masterpiece.

reply

I agree with the writer above; Ryan Gosling and Keira Knightley are perfect choices. As for the other cast...

"I believe that whatever doesn't kill you simply makes you... stranger."

Sorry, in the novel all the male characters are in their EARLY AND MID-20s! Do the math -- it is 1922 Paris, and they were just discharged from WW1 3 years earlier. Remember, Hemingway was born in 1899, so he was writing about himself at age 23.

Lady Brett Ashley is 34.

You all need to re-think your male characters. KK is not womanly/sexy enough to play LBA, but Winslet could do it. This was the major flaw of the 1957 film; get it right for a re=make!

Cate Blanchett or Naomi Watts

Robert Downey jr or Edward Norton

Yes, I was thinking Edward Norton too; he's got that rare ability to embody all the contradictory elements of Jake's nature. But I'll bet Downey could pull it off, too.......Jake
