a bit too old?

25-27 years old and Pat Hingle looks older than that.

Totally agree...are these supposed to be teenagers in a boarding high school? They are mid to late twenties in appearance, at the very least.

One of the characters refers to it as a "college." Even so, most of the actors are in their late twenties and a little too old to be college undergraduates. Still, they aren't terribly old for their roles, just a few years. Pat Hingle has several years on the others and is about ten years older than the characters. The interesting thing is that I think it is only four years later, in 1961 that he plays the father of Warren Beatty in "Splendor in the Grass." In order for that to happen, given the actors actual ages, Pat would have had to father him when he (Pat) was 13-years old. Certainly that was biologically possible, but it is unlikely he would have already been a successful businessman.

For all of that, they turn in convincing performances. It is easy for me to forget their ages when they are playing the roles and get lost in the story.

It is a post-secondary institution, so they are supposed to be in their late teens (freshmen) to early twenties (seniors).

reply

Yep, but that's not that unusual. And as for Hingle, he was in his early 30s, and always looked at least ten years older than he really was.
