This is a great movie!

It was on TCM last year (I think in August) but unfortunately I missed it. Hopefully TCM will give us another chance some day.

This movie is based on my Grandfather's most famous case. He was a homicide detective in NYC for 30 years and was a close personal friend with the victim, as well as the victim's wife. The entire case turned on his ability to get the widow to return to NYC and give testimony vs. Cockey Dunn (Cook in the movie). I lived with my Grandfather @ the end of his life, and he still received xmas cards from the Hintz family close to 50 years later.

He was a technical advisor on the film and got into some type of disagreement with the Hollywood people. Their revenge was to make the Detective Polish. (Our name's Sullivan)

The opening shot is on the rooftops above the block he lived on for 52 years @ the corner of Barrow & Hudson Sts.

Walter Matthau is hilarious in this movie.

That's very cool, how your grandfather is connected with this film. What intrigued me about it, besides it's having Matthau in the cast, is that there are a total of 14 actors who's work I am familiar with. I love older films in which there are so many actors not known at the times of there filming, whom later become pretty familiar faces to film buffs. I hope to see it some day. It can actually be purchased from 'IOffer.Com', so I may get it there if I get tired of waiting for it to show up on TCM.
