I've taken notice that most directors really shine when they take on a historical films. Examples:

Marketa Lazarova - Vlacil
Andrei Rublev - Tarkovsky
Ben-Hur - Wyler
Lawrence of Arabia - Lean
The Revenant - Iñárritu
Seven Samurai - Kurosawa
Intolerance - Griffith
Alexander Nevsky - Einstein
Barry Lyndon - Kubrick
Pan's Labyrinth - del Toro
Schindler's List - Spielberg
