I am sure it was chosen to show her character as being a bit dangerous; racy. I thought it was an exciting look.
... But those shorts stole the show.

I thought that her hair colouring in this aged her. She looks more than her 24 years at the time of this movie, in this role.

She had changed to red hair the year before in 'Love Me Tender' with Elvis Presley. It's not so much the coloring of her hair in 'The River's Edge' but the severity of it that doesn't suit her. With it being short at the sides and back.
