Awful...waste of Montgomery Clift

Just saw this film and frankly it stinks. It's sad to see the once fine Monty Clift, who only a few years earlier was smokin in "Red River" and "A Place in the Sun", fumble around and look confusingly bad. Even his voice sounds terrible. Poor Monty.

he had just been almost killed in a car accident. his face was smashed to pieces..

Raintree County wouldn't have been much good pre-accident, either. The character of Johnny just isn't well written. He should be pissed when he finds out his wife faked a pregnancy to get him...when he was in love with her already! Instead, he says, "I don't pity you, I love you," for about the five hundredth time. But, yeah. Poor Montgomery Clift.

I think Clift was just plain miscast. He was far too old to play Johnny at this point.
Don't get me wrong,Clift is a great actor. But even great actors are not right for every role.
And that the character of Johnny is not well written does not help matters much.
The film does not stink..it visually nice,a lot of the supporting performances are very good (Nigel Patrick,Lee Marvin) and it is one of Taylor's best roles.
But MGM's desire to have another Gone With The Wind fell flat on it's face.
It's a interesting misfire.
