Swimsuits in picnic scene


I can't believe that women during the time of the Civil War were wearing bathing suits in public with men who were also in suits while in their company. But if they were why would they look the same as suits women wore back in the 1920's? I did find a picture of ladies bathing attire from 1858 and it was basically a regular dress of that period but made to get wet in. Certainly much more modest than what Taylor's character was wearing.

Have you ever heard of "bathing machines"? These were wooden boxes that were placed in shallow water, so that women (clothed from neck to toes) could "bathe" in privacy. God forbid that anyone should see them wet!

I agree, that was a ridiculous anachronism.
