Closed Captioning was hilarious!!

I got this movie through Netflix, and it ended up being a substandard print from Asia, possibly Taiwan or China (??).

I have a hearing impairment, and I use closed captioning when watching TV. I turned on the captions for this, and it was obvious from the captions that the person or company who did it didn't have a thorough command of English, and was possibly, in some parts, translating it phonetically.

Whatever the reason, there was one part early in the film where Montgomery Clift and Eva Marie Saint are with fellow students at a riverbank.

Clift proclaims: "I've got to find the legendary raintree."
Saint: "Professor Stiles says it's precarious business."
Clift: "That can't be so."

However, instead of "That can't be so," the closed caption read, "What an @$$hole!"

My wife and I practically fell off our chairs, we were laughing so hard!

There were other examples like throughout the film, but this by far was the best.

Whoa, that's pretty funny! I always have CC turned on when I watch movies - not because of any hearing impairment, but I sometimes like to be doubly sure that I hear every single word of dialogue. But yes, I've noticed that more than once, Closed Captioning can really butcher a word, phrase, or name uttered in a movie, often times with hilarious results.

Latest blooper I've noticed was in "Avanti!" with Jack Lemmon and Juliet Mills. In the movie, Ms. Mills plays a character named Miss Piggott, but the Closed Captioning has her as "Miss Spigot".
