Confused about one thing...please help (possible spoiler)

Ok, I watched this remarkable movie today on TCM completely, except for about five minutes after the "Entr'acte." This is a movie you have to watch closely to keep up. Movies made for the theater at that time were expecting the audiences to have their undivided attention....which is not always the case today...but I digress, lol.
When John arrives at the decaying mansion looking for his wife and son, there is a sign at the entrance that says "Mrs. Henrietta Courtney." I thought Henrietta died in the fire and lived in a little ole cabin by the big house. Where was this mansion, and how did how did he know to go there? She had a mansion? I'm confused. Anyone?
