Pyaasa is based on Sahir Ludhianvi

Hi!, i cant' blv no one brought this up before on imdb, but Guru Dutt's pyaasa is based on the Great poet, Sahir Ludhianvi's life & his love affair with Amrita Preetam, herself a poet, if not for the (failed) love affair, we may not have witnessed pyaasa, or even SL's great poetry onscreen.

Thanks for the info on Sahir Ludhianvi. I have a question about urdu poetry in India. If one were to attend a poetry reading in India in earlier days, would the poem be sung or merely recited? I think Persian poets sang their poems, but I'm on shaky ground here. I just finished PYASSA for the first time and I consider it a master work which kept grabbing me more and more until the end's almost mystical scenes.

pardon us our troubled quietnesses.

There still are Urdu 'mushayaras' and you have both kind of poets -those who recite, and those who sing.
That being said, even the ones who recite do so with certain tune.

I'm sorry monsieur but you may be wrong.
Would you be kind enough to draw parallels between the two stories?

it has nothing to do with shair ludhianvi, guru dutt wrote the plot on his own life during struggling days like he was himself unemployed during independence,,, later some part were changed but plot remained same, even wikipedia says its guru dutt's half autobiography.
