Marilyn's White Dress

Anyone who's seen this movie should know what I'm talking when I refer to Marilyn's gorgeous white dress she wears throughout most of the movie. I've seen the real thing, it's beautiful!

I didn't, however, like this movie. I have it on DVD but I've only watched it once. Marilyn was - as usual - stunning in it, but Laurence Olivier was terrible, in my opinion! I know I'm not alone on this...

Marilyn looked radiant. I love that dress. It would be my perfect wedding dress. She sparkled.

I love Marilyn, but the dress highlighted her big belly, almost making her look pregnant. She seemed to be heavier in this movie than any of her others, I believe in part because of the dress. She really should have been made to slim down for the role.

reply

Well, well. Isn't it refreshing to hear perhaps the most beautiful actress ever on film (and largely because she was curvy and voluptuous) being berated and called fat. Isn't it bad enough that we hear actresses now talking about the trials of tribulations of being "fat" in hollywood--that is being a size four or six. We have generations of young girls growing up thinking that is is completely normal to wear a size zero. It's not healthy, and it's not attractive.

reply

It's sad that you thought Marilyn needed to slim down for this role. I found her nothing short of perfect in this movie. Maybe your thoughts are a product of hollywood's and the media's ideal of beauty, which equate thinness with perfection. How tragic that you can't appreciate the natural beauty of a healthy woman's curves.

reply

She looked gorgeous in this movie. I'd love her curves, they were all in the right places (which is probably why she's stood the test of time).

reply

Actually she probably was pregnant. She had many miscarriages, perhaps to do with the fact that it's suspected she had around 13 abortions, some of which were backstreet, and she had chronic endometriosis. Which I'm sure couldn't have been good for her reproductive organs. I think they had to let out the dress because of the pregnancy.

But I think she looks fantastic as usual... despite her size!

How do you know it was 13? I heard she had gotten some, but I've never heard a definite number like that.

Pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space 'cos its bugger all down here on Earth.

reply

The story of her 13 abortions comes from ONE source--Amy Greene. She claims Marilyn told her that. And Marilyn might have, to gain Amy's sympathy (MM was having an affair with Amy's hubby Milton Greene.) There's not one other source for even a single MM abortion, no less 13!!! But yes, Marilyn was pregnant during "Prince..." and yes she miscarried. It was one of the reasons she was so "difficult" on that pic.

Marilyn's figure looked glorious...of all her films, this was the height of her beauty. Lose weight...how can people be so shallow, vapid, and tasteless?

reply

I happen to know, dear Marilyn was a perfect size 6...

reply

I too thought she was so lovely in that pretty white dress - I did notice her tummy fluctuate, but quite honestly thought she was so gorgeous regardless. I'm always flabbergasted when people on these boards are quick to yell "FAT" about MM and I think it's on every single board for every movie she was in too. She was beautiful & sexy and even when carrying a few extra pounds, she still was the picture of feminine beauty. I would take her figure at her heaviest over any other skinny celeb in Hollywood today!

My only complaint, is that it would've been so much more fun to see her in more costumes thru-out the picture. Honestly I got a bit bored by the end seeing her in the one dress for the majority of the film.

Only her boobs and hips were a 6, her waist was more like a 0 since she had a 22" waist.

NO she shouldn't have been made to slim down.

She was naturally curvy. That's one of the things that made her special. She was lovely as she was.

reply

Perhaps she appeared pregnant because she was. She suffered a miscarriage during filming according to the Trivia section of the movie. Wow! I just realized the inappropriateness of that - there is nothing trivial about losing a baby.

I agree with phoebehurty, skeletons aren't attractive and i wish all these girls would stop losing so much weight, Marilyn was perfect in this movie(and every other movies I've seen her in) she didn't need to loose any weight and she was FAR from fat. I also agree with michaeljoseph_74 the only thing that made this film watchable was her.

reply

She was pregnant during this film, but miscarried.

reply

3 or 4 copies of this dress were made in slightly different sizes to accomodate Marilyns varying measurements. The illnesses she suffered at this time caused severe fluid retention problems. Yes, she did have a miscarriage during the filming. Films are rarely filmed in story-line sequence, and TPSG was more jig-sawed than most. If you view carefully, you can identify takes made before her miscarriage [bigger tum] and those made after [flatter tum].

reply

I agree with the majority that she looked fabulous in this dress. No one could have worn it better and it hugged her curves so well. I like the fact that she had a cute little tummy, it's a good example to female audiences that you can look fab and without having a 5-inch waist.

reply

@ Tara-hanks - I think it is entirely plausible that Marily was pregnant in this film but would you care to share your source? It is well-known that she was pregnant during the filming of Some Like it Hot but I've found no such evidence for The Prince and the Showgirl.

reply

I saw nothing wrong with Olivier's performance and Marilyn was her usual awesome self! The dress looked a little too tight but she looked great in it.

So pleased that people here have enough taste to have a whole thread on that dress! I watched the movie last night, & thought that dress--and Marilyn in it--were a knockout. The gown showed off her hourglass figure to perfection. What a luscious looking woman!

reply

She looked 15-20 pounds overweight in this movie. But if she was pregnant that would help explain it.

reply

And every ounce was in the right place!

reply

Well, I think there are a great deal of women that also have slim builds, like a size 1, 3 or 5 - and a good number of them are able to maintain that type of figure even after having children. I guess it also depends on metabolism and a desire to keep your body in that condition.

I know that during Marilyn's era there was more of an emphasis on the voluptous or zoftig shape that Marilyn had. And certainly if you admire that type of woman, as many do, then she was certainly the prototype. I prefer women that are more slender.

reply

In reality Marilyn had the ideal body. People didn't start idealizing being thin until the 1960s when Twiggy first started modeling. There is even an interview with Twiggy stating that it was near impossible to find work when she first started out because no one knew what to do with someone who was so thin. So I guess we have her to blame for today's thin ideals.

reply

Actually, I never cared for a body type like Twiggy's either, that is just too thin. I prefer someone in the middle of voluptous and stringbean.

reply

While I agree that Twiggy was the start of the horrible trend we see today, I do not blame her so much as I do the media, & the stupidity of those who just fall in line.

Those who study history are doomed to watch others repeat it.

Marilyn was usually thin except when her weight fluctuated due to depression. She weighed 115lbs with 36-22-36 measurements.

My mother is of her generation, and always mentioned how she LOVED Marilyn Monroe's "little tummy." ("It's so feminine!" she'd say.)

The fact is that women are just padded with more fat than men, to cushion a baby, etc. So unless women have had ribs removed or have done a ton of sit-ups, they're going to have a little padding there.

I definitely agree that it is "feminine". And I am not referring to "fat", but to the actual curve of a tummy (even a slim one). Not ALL women are fortunate enough to have a curved (NOT "fat") tummy, but many are, and it's so ridiculous to see them fuss over what is actually one of the best features of the feminine body.

The funny thing is that, according to a book or a magazine (I don't remember where exactly I read it), MM actually said, when talking about her (supposed or real) daily routine of sit-ups, that "there's nothing like <i.e. as pretty as> a flat-board tummy"... ;)

I for one couldn't disagree more.
A "flat-board" abdomen is masculine-looking and just plain unattractive.

But, to each their own...

I am confused as to WHY there was no costume change. I agree the dress is gorgeous but three days? She supposedly went home before the coronation ball, why didn't she borrow something? Or get the Duke or King to buy her a dress?
