Casting in the final scene

Kubrick's future wife is cute as a button, but her tavern-owner handler was as French as an Eskimo. He acted and sounded like a Noo Yawk vaudeville master of ceremonies. And some of those soldiers looked old enough to be on their last legs in a retirement home.

The average age of the combat soldier during WWI was 30+ and even 50+ would not be uncommon. Later wars were considerably younger, indeed. And slso towards the ending of this war did the average age drop drastically. Point is that the average age had fallen since then. But then (as in WWI) the range of men drafted were quite high in age. So eventhough I would agree with you, it is not necessarily incorrect. And beside I remember quite an obvious spread from very young boys to men way past their prime in the final scene... which, seem to support how it actually was.
