Bonnie Raitt's Dad vs. Gordon McRae

The great John Raitt was the quintessential Billy Bigelow in Carousel and a smashing Curly in Oklahoma. Why did they keep giving the movie roles of huge musicals (Carousel, Oklahoma) to Gordon Macrae who couldn't act, wore a girdle and never quite 'sizzled' the way Raitt can?

The same reason Brad Pitt keeps getting movies: he was a pretty boy who happened to be in a movie where he was surrounded by enough good actors and a good enough story for the common man to overlook his bad acting. But this accidental casting led to a pretty good looking resume, and if you're a good looking man...a decent resume means you're set for life.
