'The Master'

Interesting that Paul Thomas Anderson cited this as one of the influences on developing the character of Freddy in The Master, and actually had Joaquin Phoenix watch it, to get the drunk scenes right.

Sounds like vain name-dropping. There are countless opportunities to 'authentically' observe drunks, both on film and in the flesh, without resorting to a sixty year-old quasi-documentary. This film is so stilted and staged that any insights gained would be dubious, to say the least.

It's funny you mention that since I was thinking about Joaquin Phoenix's character each time when seeing Ray on screen. The influence can be definitely seen.

Wow, I also thought of *The Master* while watching this. Handsome drunk, lost in the world in the 1950s ... the parallels are quite obvious.
