Arliss and the bear

I always hated that scene when Arliss goes and grabs the baby bear. Does anyone else feel disturbed by that scene? I don't get why he goes and grabs the baby bear and won't even let it go when the mama bear charges after him. I'm guessing that Arliss was too shocked or scared he didn't know what to do, but I thought he was such a nut going after it.

He was a KID doing a stupid thing. I thought it was a great scene and, despite some sarcasm in a prior post, the absolute #1 favorite movie of my childhood.

In the book Arliss was 4 years old, and in the movie he was played by a small 8-year-old. To him at that age a bear cub was just a cute animal like a puppy and as such another plaything. If I remember correctly, in the book he was frightened as the mama bear approached and was hanging onto the cub in a panic.

If I was his mom I'd have whipped him good for messing with bears. Picking up a snake is one thing but messing with a cub is a death wish.
