2. Alphaville, une étrange aventure de Lemmy Caution (Alphaville) (1965)
This one is french, not italian.

reply

It was a co-production with Italy. Check the IMDb page for the film to see.

French Cast (mostly)

Listing this as one of your favorite Italian movies is not very smart.

reply

Strange how hard it seems sometimes to pick up the real deal... is it so hard to choose among a country's cinematographic history that is so rich and important that it is in fact difficult to restrict oneself to only 5 choices? It seems so. Out of 5 selections, NameoftheGame managed to select two movies that are technically Italian to a limited, and in the case of "The Wages of Fear", extremely limited extent. One wouln't think of Godard (Alphaville) and Clouzot (Wages) as Italian film makers, and yet, they seem to sound so to our friend here...

Let's be serious!!

My picks are:

1) Amarcord (F. Fellini)
2) Morte a Venezia (L. Visconti)
3) Il Gattopardo (L. Visconti)
4) Il Buono, il brutto, il cattivo (S. Leone)
5) Il vangelo secondo Matteo (P.P. Pasolini)

reply

Numbers 2 and 4 are French films, directed by Godard and Clouzot. But great, none the less.

reply

Alphaville is French, it's by Godard, but I'm glad you like it.

reply

Like others have noted, Alphaville is totally considered French, despite having received some money from some Italians. It was shot in Paris, directed by a French director, with an almost all French cast.

Even the most primitive society has an innate respect for the insane.

reply

Five is too restricting for me but anyone seen "Seven Beauties" by Lina Wurtmueller (sp)

What's significant about this film is that is the director was the FIRST female director to be nominated for an Oscar.

I shall call him Squishy and he shall be mine and he shall be my Squishy.

reply

I stick with crazyhellboy: 5 is really a great limitation compared with the prolific and high quality Italian production.

Anyway I would like to recommend 5 Italian movies that are great and a must to see:

Accattone (1961) Director: Pier Paolo Pasolini
Milano Calibro 9 (1972) Director: Fernando di Leo
Rocco e i suoi fratelli (1960) Director: Luchino Visconti
Le quattro giornate di Napoli (1962) Director: Nanni Loy
La leggenda del pianista sull'oceano (1998) Director: Giuseppe Tornatore

reply

1-C'era una volta il West
2-la strada
3-Il postino
4-L'Eclisse
5-Rocco e i suoi fratelli

reply

These are all classics. I'd also add the much newer 'Golden Door'.

reply

Only 5? Difficult but I'll try:

1. Nights of Cabiria (Fellini)
2. Accattone (Pasolini)
3. The Leopard (Visconti)
5. Cinema Paradiso (Tornatore)
5. Umberto D. (De Sica)

reply

1. Lisa and the Devil (1974)
2. Juliet of the Spirits (1965)
3. Amarcord (1973)
4. Suspiria (1977)
5. The Perfume of the Lady in Black (1974)

reply

"The Perfume of the Lady in Black" (1974) -- Oooh, I haven't seen this one! I've seen a French film of the same name, but different plot. I'm excited, thanks for the recommendation!

reply

it would be too difficult to list only five films but the best is La Dolce Vita imo.

reply

Eight and a Half
Nights of Cabiria
The Leopard

Can't think of any more that I love at the moment.
