Jean's accent

I don't speak Italian, so I might be completely wrong about this, but Jean Marais' accent sounded pretty good to me. Does anyone know if he spoke Italian before making the film? I heard on one of the DVD interviews that Maria Schell basically learned the language in the two weeks before shooting started, well enough to fake it, anyway. (Her performance sounded fine to me, too!)

interesting! I had never heard that. Comme c'est bizarre.

All Italian films at that time were dubbed. I don't know exactly why Italian filmmakers never used recorded sound on the sets and used instead that technique but that's a rather well-known fact. The actors always post-dubbed their dialogues (as the films were shot silently). In the numerous Franco-Italian productions, the French actors were dubbed by Italian actors at this point.

And if you're familiar with Jean Marais' voice, you can tell right away it is not his voice you hear in "Notte bianchi".
