Paul Birch
Paul Birch quit about 3/4 into the production after a blow up with Corman.Lyle Latell was used to finish the movie because he was the same build as Birch.they did only back and angle shots so it would appear to be the same person.

That is really amazing that this was pulled off. I never noticed any discrepancies. I wonder what Roger Corman did to piss off such a distinguished actor as Paul Birch?

As I understand it, the conflict was over the contact lenses...Birch hated them because they were painful and didn't want to wear them anymore. I guess he felt that the eyes had already been established and didn't need to be shown anymore. Corman felt differently. There were shouts and some pushing and shoving, but no fisticuffs. Birch walked off.

That's interesting. I saw Roger Corman at a Fangoria convention some years ago and he seemed pretty docile enough as a personality. Certainly not one to actually get belligerent with someone. Then again, he has built two separate celluloid empires from scratch and that probably takes a person with a steely resolve, so it's not impossible to fathom that this incident had occurred.

Yeah, successful people don't play when their livelihoods are at stake.
On the US copy I have there is an interview with Corman, and he says that nine days into the ten day shoot, PauL Birch was unwell and unable to continue. Corman replaced him for a number of pick-up shots on the last day, but says nothing about any bad feeling - perhaps he was being diplomatic.

I like this version of what happened better. Roger Corman, from the appearance I saw at a Fangoria convention, seemed like a gentleman. He has given dozens of very famous actors, actresses, directors, editors, production designers and so on their first breaks and I have yet to see on record anyone saying anything negative about the man.
Let's just assume it went down the way Roger Corman said it did.

I have read some very kind and appreciative words in this thread about my father, Paul Birch. I am also very grateful to have heard more here about the unfortunate incident with Mr. Corman. The only knowledge I had of it before was from a book which gave a very vague account. I am most gratified to learn that Mr. Corman was so gracious in his references to the spat. I was about age 5 when this took place, and never heard about it from my dad. I can only hope that if he did cause such a disruption there was a worthy cause for it. He was a very good guy...

Roger Corman will be remembered for the hundreds of movies he produced and /or directed. Fans are going to remember the movies and how entertaining they were, not the behind-the-scenes dramas. NOT OF THIS EARTH ( 1957) is an entertaining movie first and foremost and Paul Birch was dynamic in his role. Ultimately that is what will be appreciated by the audiences for this movie.

I loved your father's unique work in this picture. He made it the cult classic it remains today. There are two direct remakes that are good but his version still tops them. Friends of mine have been quoting his lines four years.
