The Seance

I thought that the seance scene was brilliant. The interruptions by the Dana Andrews character was irritating but the atmosphere created was excellent and very well done.

reply

Oh yeah haha, just watched it. I thought the bit where he was the spirit of the child was funny.

" Mummy.....Mummy......I can't find...I can't find Frederica...."
HOW does Mrs. K know it's some poor child's lost dog? Watching that is creepy. If you all want to check the original story, "Casting/Runes" check my previous post for the link, and check out my next one- it's a bit of a puzzle.

And that 'indian language' from Mr. 'Crimson Eagle' makes the whole thing look very fake....could the mediums be followers of Karswell...?

reply

That's a very good point. Theres very little mentioned in the film about his "followers" apart from Karswll's conversation with his mother.

I still think the actor who plays Mr Meek is brilliant in the part

However it is his house and he must be coming home from work, he allows his wife to greet him briefly, take his coat, make a remark about the weather, suggests that Andrews dosen't tell him anything, and procede.

I wonder what he does for a living?

reply

Good point about him telling them not to mention anything....however, if they WERE followers of Dr. K, they would have already been informed by him anyway, and it would have made Meeks look bonafide.... I totally agree, he does a fantastic job...
"Cherry-ripe, cherry-ripe....fair and full ones..."
I will try to find a link to the lyrics....did anybody guess my question about the runes stopping at my other post??

reply

Mrs K attempts to look under the table for Fredrica. .
The vanishing writing on the card.
How did Kasrwell know Andrews would be in the libary?
Andrews asks the others about a tune he has heard.
How many followers has Karswell got?
Who takes over now?
What happens to his mother?

reply

Mrs. K could have been simply trying to hear the voice better; The card could have been a DUPLICATE later switched...karswell could have easily found out where Holden went, by pre-bribing the cabbie or even just asking one the newspaper men; Karswell could have been whistling the tune to instill it in Holden; Nobody knows how many followers there are, but it seems mostly the Hobart clan only, because no other group is ever identified; NOBODY takes over now because Mr. K destroyed the 'cipher' key to the book, and his followers would soon realize Mr. K's failure...I suspect Mrs. K would give everything away to charity in order to make some amends.
Of course, in this version of the movie, there is no doubt of the evil powers, so nothing is left to the imagination....uh, hey could you hold this piece of paper for me...?

(runs away laughing maniacally_)

reply

The librarian, when asked by Holden if he saw the man he was speaking to, denies seeing him.

reply

Maybe he just wasn't looking....it's very ambiguous.

reply

What was the reference Holden made about a tune he had heard?

reply

when he whistles the tune to o'brian and kumar he says, "I must have heard it somewhere'...AND that tune is, in fact, the exact tune you hear whistled right after holden meets dr.K, as dr.K is walking away from him in the library-
(as a synthasized 'flute' sound)

reply

I watched that part a couple of times and I *think* that as he is walking down the creepy hallway in the apartment building (and he looks around very nervously) he is actually hearing that tune, you can kinda make it out.

reply

I very much doubt his followers were restricted to the Hobarts - Karswell said it was his followers' fear that paid for his lifestyle. Those poor saps didn't have two pennies to rub together.

"Wait till they get a load of me!"

I always thought Mrs. Karswell didn't have all her oars in the water. I don't think she's evil, and her actions at the seance are somewhat humorous, although she is not a comic charatcer. Mrs. Karswell, in her compassion, maybe assumes Frederica is a dog, or perhaps the little girl has appeared in previous seances (Mrs. Karswell is, after all, on friendly terms with the Meeks).

reply

If I remember Mrs. K says "SOME poor child's dog" meaning it was a new event, or does she say "doll"? In any case, they would know the child's name if it came before; that indian 'language' of mr. 'crimson eagle' is suspect, AND-
it's possible Mrs. K is innocent and Mr. Meeks and wife are corrupt, yes? If Karswell wanted, he could have given them all of the info needed.
Just as Karswell could have simply looked in a newspaper or asked the newsmen where Holden was staying or when he goes to the library.

reply

She says "doll".

reply

Did anyone notice, when the medium screams "Nooo!", it sounds identical to the scream of Professor Harrington at the start of the film? Identical...

I believe Frederica is a doll, not a dog.

It's hard to hear it, but I think you re right;

I am *MAX POWERS*- dynamic man of action!!

reply

Don't agree. I thought it was ludicrous. `Cherry Ripe' indeed!.

reply

While I love this film, I do find that the sceance sequence contains some of the weakest moments in the film. But hey, maybe that's just me. :-)

reply

I agree whole heartedly. Good scene. Even, before it's time. It displays a maturity in film making that wasn't there in other films of the day. And I agree with you on Dana Andrews character being irritating throughout. Not his fault, it was in the script. I thought he was a little one dimensional throughout. Too stubornly sticking to the "it's a hoax" schtick. He would have been much better, while believing that, pretending to go along just to do some "inside research" and then being shocked to find out it was real.

reply

I think the seanse scene was the best comedic piece in this movie.

I agree Strazdamonas . The " Seance scene " was a riot ( especially the " Cherry Ripe song " lol ) . It took some of tension off a bit from all the rest of the creepy scary stuff that was going on in this excellent classic movie IMPO . I just got through watching this movie on TCM for the very first time too . Thanks chrislyons12 for your subject post .
