Genuinely Scary

This is one of the few films that i watched with my mum when i was a kid that
still makes me jump today,i got the same sort of vibe from 'Drag Me To hell'
albeit with some silliness.Slasher fans should watch this to
see what a horror film should be about.....

I just watched it today, and while I wouldn't go as far to say that the film was scary in its entirety, it did certainly have its moments (the ending).

As a kid I found it scary, and as an adult I find it compelling and entertaining. It's a slow-burn, but at the right pace that keeps it interesting. Like many have said, there's probably a little too much shown of the demon, especially in the beginning where a close-up the demon is shown, which IMO lessens the impact of the final scene where the demon again appears. Director Tourneur's minimalist approach towards revealing the demon was probably the right idea, unfortunately the film's producers felt otherwise.

For me, one of the scariest parts is where Holden returns to his hotel room and hears the demonic noises coming from the far, darkened regions of the hallway. Very eerie.

Curse of the Demon is one of the few movies from childhood which sticks with me as truly scary, even too scary. I'm afraid of demons in real life and if horror movies are meant to tap into such fears this one does it for me. It contains one of the most gruesome, even disgusting if perhaps unintentionally, scenes I'll ever see, one of evil at work and what it has to offer the world. Suffice to say a man is mauled to death by the demon while it's holding him in its hand. It's a truly awful thing to watch, more than my child's mind could accept. If I ever choose to watch this movie again I can't imagine how and why I'd not avoid that particular scene.
